Clematis Pruning Guide

  • Group 1      Spring flowering clematis. These clematis flower on growth made the previous year so should be pruned immediately after flowering, any later and you risk removing the following years flowers. They can be either cut back hard or simply tidied.

  • Group 2       Early/mid summer flowering clematis. These clematis flower on new growth sprouting from the previous seasons growth. Initially you should aim to produce a framework of older stems from which the flowering growth can sprout. Once this is in place you should only need to prune out old damaged stems.

  • Group 3        Late summer flowering clematis. These large hybrids flower on the current seasons growth. This group is cut back hard to a healthy pair of buds approx 30cms from the ground in late Feb or early March. This results in plenty of fresh new growth from which the clematis will flower.
