A lovely form of Abelia having lance shaped green leaves with a very pretty cream edging and stems that are red when young. Evergreen, it produces pale pink tubular flowers from late summer to autumn though unless it is placed somewhere you can get close to these can become lost against the variegation. Abeliophyllum distichum Roseum

Mistakenly known as the 'White Forsythia' due to its habit of flowering on bare stems before the leaves emerge, this variety is the more uncommon pink form, producing highly scented, pale pink  in very early spring. The foliage also has very good autumn colour. Fully hardy, happy in most soils in full sun. HGT: 1.2m

Abutilon 'Ashford Red'

A very striking evergreen shrub having dark green foliage and producing large, bright red, bell shaped flowers for most of th year when happy. Amalanchier lamarckii

A very beautiful large shrub or small tree producing a froth of star shaped, white flowers in spring just as the pinky bronze leaves are beginning to emerge.  Amalanchier alnifolia 'Obelisk'

This columnar form of Amalanchier is ideal for a garden where space is at a premium. It truly has something for all seasons, it produces a mass of snow-white blooms in spring amidst the bronze tinted, new foliage . An unusual form of Buddleja known as 'The weeping butterfly bush'.  Catalpa bignonoides Aurea

A stunning 'golden' form of the 'Indian Bean Tree', producing purplish-red new shoots that really stand out against the more mature, large, butter yellow leaves. It produces clusters of white flowers in summer that are followed, in long hot summers, by long 'bean' pods. Whilst not fully hardy in the true sense, during the winter of 10/11 we only lost the ends of the stems. Whilst it will grow in most soils it prefers a deep fertile soil in full sun. Cercis chinensis 'Avondale'

More of a small tree than a shrub we just couldn't resist this stunning form of the Judas tree. Corylopsis pauciflora

More commonly known as the 'Buttercup Hazel' there is nothing quite like catching sight of this graceful shrub in full flower in the winter sun. Fatsia japonica - False castor oil plant

Although this evergreen shrub does flower, they tend to be a bit insignificant so instead, grow it for its wonderfully tropical looking, large, palmate leaves. The fatsia is happy in moist but well drained soil in full sun or part shade. Fully hardy in most winters though the leaves do droop in the frost, but don't worry as soon as the frost melts they perk up again. HGT: 4m

Fremontodendron 'Pacific Sunset'

Ilex aquifolium Argentea marginata

Indigofera decora

A rarely offered little sub-shrub that produces long racemes of pink, pea-like flowers that our customers have likened to Wisteria flowers. Loropetalum chinense 'Fire Dance' - Chinese Witch Hazel

A beautiful relative of the more commonly known witch hazel but with a difference. Rarely offered, this evergreen shrub has small, over-lapping, heart-shaped deep olive green leaves that are replaced in late summer with fresh deep plum pink leaves that retain their colour through winter and into spring before turning olive-green. Produces deep pink/red spidery flowers in winter. Prefers humus rich, moist soil in a sunny, sheltered spot. HGT: 1m

Magnolia stellata

Otherwise known as the 'Star Magnolia' this is a gorgeous variety, producing lightly scented, snow white 'star' shaped flowers on bare branches before the leaves open. Flowers from March to April. Happy on most soils & fully hardy. Very slow growing but eventually will reach about 3m.

Just as above but with a delicate tinge of pink to the flowers. 

Magnolia stellata 'Water Lily'

A new from of 'Star Magnolia' but with pure white flowers each having upwards of 20 petals. Growing conditions as above.  

Magnolia Yellow Bird

In our opinion, the best of the 2nd generation yellow hybrids. Yellow Bird produces large, lightly scented, buttercup yellow, bowl shaped flowers mostly before the leaves, in early spring. Prefers a neutral to acid soil in full sun or part shade, though protect from strong winds. Fully hardy, will eventually reach about 6m

Nandina domestica 'Fire Power' - Heavenly Bamboo

Although not actually a bamboo at all, this gorgeous little shrub is commonly planted next to doorways in Japan as it is believed to dispell bad dreams. Evergreen, it has bright yellow-green foliage that turns a striking orange-red in autumn/winter. Produces panicles of small white flowers in summer followed in hot summers by small red berries. Prefers moist but well drained soil in a sunny. sheltered spot. HGT: 50cm

Neillia thibetica

A vigorous, thicket forming shrub with low growing, arching stems and deciduous, toothed, mid green foliage that produces racemes of rose pink flowers in late spring or early summer. Fully hardy. Originally a woodland plant, this Neillia prefers fertile, moist soil in part shade. HGT: 2m

Olearia x haastii

Usually known as the 'Daisy bush', this much under rated, evergreen shrub becomes smothered in clusters of small white flowers with yellow centres and a light fragrance from July to August. Simply trim with shears when flowers have faded. Can also be grown as an informal hedge.  Fully hardy and tolerant of most soils it prefers full sun or part shade. HGT: 2m

Philadelphus 'Snowbelle'

Physocarpus opulifolius 'Lady in Red'

Grown mainly for its deep red/purple foliage and stunning crimson shoots, this physocarpus form a dense shrub and produces cup shaped, pale pink, fragrant flowers in summer followed by pale brown, inedible fruit in autumn. Fully hardy, this plant prefers neutral, moist but well drained soil in full sun or part shade. HGT: 1.5m

Pieris japonica 'Katsura'

A stunningly beautiful new Pieris from Japan. Discovered on a wooded hillside near a shinto temple, this lovely evergreen forms a medium, dome-shaped shrub with large glossy, dark green foliage and truly eye-catching wine red new shoots that turn green with age. Katsura produces arching racemes of rose pink, bell-shaped flowers in spring. Prefers ericaceous, moist but well drained soil in full sun or part shade. HGT: 1m

Prostanthera rotundifolia

Commonly known as 'The round leaved Australian Mintbush', this lovely evergreen shrub forms a rounded shrub that becomes smothered in masses of small lilac-pink flowers in mid-summer. But the true delight is delicious minty fragrance given off by the foliage whenever you brush by.  Mostly hardy, it will need protection in harsh winters. Prefers well drained, fertile soil in a sunny, sheltered spot. Well worth giving it a bit of protection. HGT: 2m

Prunus cerasifera Hessei

A lovely small tree ideal  for small spaces or even a tub. Hessei has dark green foliage with irregular, white edges that turn pink when the rest of the leaf turns deep red in autumn. It produces scented, white flowers in spring. Fully hardy, deciduous. Happy in most  moist but well drained soils in full sun. HGT: 2.5m

Prunus kojo no mai

Slowly forming a large shrub or small tree, this prunus has dintinctive 'zigzag' branches that, in spring, become clothed in bunches of soft white flowers. Sambucus nigra 'Black Lace'

A beautiful relative of our native elder, this Sambucus has deciduous, finely divided foliage that is so dark it's almost black. This acts as a perfect foil the the large, flattened panicles of baby-pink flowers produced in Spring. The foliage turns a rich red in Autumn. Sarcococca confusa - Sweet Box

A much under rated evergreen shrub having glossy dark green small leaves similar but much nicer than box leaves and producing VERY sweet smelling white, spidery flowers along its stems in winter. These are followed by black berries. Grows happily in humus rich, moist but well drained soil in full or part shade. Fully hardy. HGT: 1.5m

Sassafras albidum

Rarely offered, this lovely tree was used for centuries as a herbal medicine by Native Americans though it is now discouraged. The Sassafras has aromatic, large, 3-lobed, mid green leaves that turn reddish-orange in Autumn. It prefers a fairly neutral soil in full sun or part shade. Incredibly hardy. HGT: 15m

Sinocalycanthus chinensis

A rare and stunning plant from central China first introduced into the UK in 1989 by Roy Lancaster. Commonly known as the 'Chinese Allspice' plant, this sinocalycanthus has large, glossy, fresh green, deciduous foliage and will eventually produce lovely, large, creamy-white flowers, not unlike Magnolia flowers, during mid-summer. Fully hardy though it prefers protection from cold, winter winds, it prefers fertile, moist but well drained soil in a warm sunny spot. HGT: 3m

Skimmia japonica 'Magic Marlot'

A lovely, new introduction from Holland. 'Magic Marlot' forms a compact, dense, evergreen shrub with grey-green foliage edged with cream. Skimmia x confusa 'Kew Green'

Spirea x van houttei 'Pink Ice'

A pretty, compact, deciduous shrub having dark green foliage that is heavily speckled with white and often flushed pink. 'Pink Ice' produces clusters of pink buds that open to white flowers in early Summer. Fully hardy, it is happy in any reasonable soil in full sun. HGT: 2m

Stewartia pseudocamellia

A beautiful, small tree originating from Japan. This Stewartia produces gorgeous white flowers with yellow stamens from mid-summer that look very similar to Camellia flowers - hence the name. The dark green foliage develops gorgeous shades of orange and red in Autumn before falling to reveal the lovely pinky-brown and grey patchwork bark. Although not difficult to grow it does need shelter from cold winds and protection from late frosts which have been known to kill young specimens if they hit after the leaves have emerged. Syringa vulgaris 'Prince Wolkonsky' - Red Lilac

Syringa vulgaris 'Souvenir de Louis Spath'

Viburnum bodnantense 'Dawn'

Most of the year this lovely shrub will fade into the background but just wait till winter! In mild winters this viburnum produces large clusters of rosy pink or blush white flowers, on the bare branches that have the sweetest scent from October to March (with just a short break), in harsh winters it produces them from January to March. The deciduous foliage also has good autumn colour. Fully hardy it prefers moist but well drained soil in full sun or part shade. HGT: 3m

Viburnum carlesii 'Aurora'

As with the bodnantense 'Dawn' above, most of the year you probably won't notice this deciduous shrub, however, in spring it really comes into it's own producing tight clusters of red buds that open into pale pink flowers with an absolutely stunning fragrance. Viburnum nudum 'Pink Beauty'

A lovely, medium sized, deciduous shrub with glossy, dark green foliage that develops a gorgeous autumn colour and produces panicles of white flowers, flushed pink in June followed by blue-black berries in Autumn. Happy in most reasonable soils in part shade. Fully hardy. HGT: 2m

Viburnum plicatum 'Lanarth White'

An upright, deciduous shrub with dark green, veined foliage that grows with a tiered habit. It produces beautiful, large, fragrant, white flowers similar to those of a lacecao hydrangea, from May to July. Happy in most reasonable soils in part shade. Fully hardy. HGT: 1.8m 

Viburnum plicatum 'Popcorn'

More commonly known as the 'Japanese Snowball Bush', this compact, deciduous shrub has dark green foliage and, from May to June, is clothed in round 'snowballs' of fragrant, white flowers. Happy in most reasonable soils in part shade. Good autumn colour and fully hardy. HGT: 2m  

Viburnum tinus Bewley's variegated

An unusual viburnum having evergreen foliage heavily splashed with creamy yellow markings. It produces large clusters of small white flowers from November to May that are followed by metallic black berries. Slow growing. Fully hardy it's happy in virtually any soil in sun or part shade. HGT:1.5m

A lovely, rounded, evergreen shrub with dark green leathery foliage that provides the perfect backdrop to the large clusters of small white flowers opening from pink buds throughout winter. For over 2,500 years this shrubby herb has been used in the treatment of all sorts of gynaecological problems, from PMS to ovarian cysts & is still in use today.
